Born the fourth son of Henry Vernon and Penelope Vernon (née Phillips) and educated at the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth, Vernon joined the Royal Navy in 1739 when he was appointed a Volunteer-per-order on HMS Portland. Promoted to lieutenant in 1743, he became commander of the sloop HMS Baltimore in 1747, captain of HMS Mermaid in 1753 and captain of HMS Lyme in 1755. He went on to be captain of HMS St Albans and was present at the destruction of the French Fleet at the Battle of Lagos on 18–19 August 1759. He went on to command successively ... Knighted in June 1773, he became Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies Station in 1776 and took part in an indecisive action off Pondicherry on 10 August 1778.
