Sulzberger was born in Mount Kisco, New York, the son of Barbara Winslow (née Grant) and Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger Sr., the grandson of Arthur Hays Sulzberger, and the great-grandson Adolph Ochs.



Sulzberger's mother was of mostly English and Scottish origin and his father was of Jewish origin (both Ashkenazic and Sephardic). His parents divorced when he was 5 years old. Sulzberger was raised in his mother's Episcopalian faith; however, he no longer observes the religion.
