Her mother died from diphtheria on December 7, 1892, and Elliott Jr. later died of the same disease. Her father, an alcoholic confined to a sanitarium, died on August 14, 1894 when he tried to jump from a window during a fit of delirium tremens. (In 1941, her brother Hall, the only remaining member of her birth family, would also die from alcohol-related causes.) Eleanor's childhood losses left her prone to depression throughout her life.
