In 1923, this idea finally materialised with the formation of the brewery Brouwerij van Alken plc. This soon developed into one of the largest breweries in the country – especially due to ‘CRISTAL’, the first Belgian pilsener – a pale lager beer - created by Jozef Indekeu in 1928, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2008.
... Jozef Indekeu came from a very old Limburg family of brewers (first mentioned in 1642). He was awarded his degree in Brewery Engineering from the Königliche Landwirtschaftliche Hochschule in Berlin. Even prior to WWI, he was writing notes on his vision to establish a large brewery in the Limburg region.
