Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Hubbell was a three sport letterman at Hall High School. He attended the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship where he played offensive tackle for the Razorbacks. In his senior year, the Arkansas Razorbacks were SWC co-champs and beat undefeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. He was drafted in the National Football League draft by the Chicago Bears, but a serious knee injury ended his football career. He graduated from Arkansas with degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970, and then graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arkansas School
