François-Nicolas-Benoît Haxo was born in Lunéville and entered the Engineers. Haxo embraced the profession of arms early in his career. He left Lieutenant of minors in the School of Artillery and Engineers of Chalons-sur-Marne in 1793. Soon after, Haxo became Engineer Captain in the Army of the Rhine in 1794. In 1796, he attended the Polytechnic School, Ecole Polytechnique.



In 1801, he became battalion commander after taking the Fort of Bard by the army of Italy.
