He was the son of François de Coligny (1557–1591) and his wife Marguerite d'Ailly, and the grandson of admiral Gaspard de Coligny.
During the Thirty Years' War, he won the Battle of Les Avins against a Spanish army under Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano. On 6 July 1641, Gaspard de Coligny commanded the army of Louis XIII at the Battle of La Marfée, where he was defeated.
