His parents were Michel Barthe (1758-1820), deputy and counsel of the five hundred, and Marie-Anne Valette (1762-1830). He was educated at Saint-Rémy college in Toulouse, then studied at the faculty of Law, and began his career in Paris. He became affiliated with the Carbonari. On 8 August 1820 he married Célestine Victoire Thomas (1801-1875).
