He was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Senegambia in 1920, with a titular bishopric (Europus). On 26 July 1926, he was appointed superior general of the Holy Ghost Fathers. In 1945, he became an archbishop. He resigned as superior general of the Holy Ghost Fathers on 26 July 1950.
