Crowley holds a B.A. in Political Science from Colgate University and a Ph.D. in International Relations from Columbia University (2000). The title of her doctoral dissertation was Clearer than truth: Determining and preserving grand strategy. The evolution of American policy toward the People's Republic of China under Truman and Nixon.



Crowley began written correspondence with former President Richard Nixon and took the position of a research assistant for Nixon. Nixon made her his Foreign Policy Assistant in 1990 because he appreciated her foreign policy opinions. She was an editorial adviser and consultant on his last two books, Seize the Moment (1992) and Beyond Peace (1994).
