Taylor was born in Schenectady, New York; his parents were John Bellamy Taylor (a relative of Edward Bellamy) and Marcia Estabrook Jones. He attended Williams College in Massachusetts before enrolling at the Harvard Law School in 1928, where he received his law degree in 1932.
