The Gores are an Anglo-Irish family. Gore was the third son of the Honourable Charles Alexander Gore and Augusta Lavinia Priscilla (née Ponsonby), a daughter of the fourth Earl of Bessborough. His brother Philip was the fourth Earl of Arran while his brother Spencer was the first winner of the Wimbledon Championships.



His parents sent him to be educated at Harrow School, London. Afterwards he became a student at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became a supporter of the trades-union movement.
